‘BRILLIANT’ is a competition run by Artichoke in which 4 local artists win the opportunity to include their installations in Lumiere.
The Durham 2013 winners are: Stephen Newby, Sarah Blood, Beth J Ross, and duo Matt Sale and Stu Langley (Twist Design).
The amazing thing about BRILLIANT is that it is open to all – from established artists to people who have never picked up a pencil before – and it gives them the chance to exhibit their work amongst internationally renowned artists.
Artichoke, Lumiere and BRILLIANT are all about making art accessible to everyone.

This blog – Being BRILLIANT: Durham – is all about this year’s BRILLIANT artists.
It will allow an exciting insight into these artists and their installations, into Lumiere, and into the world of art. Interviews, Works-In-Progress, Q&A’s, podcasts, photos, and much more.

This year Lumiere is also coming to Derry-Londonderry, from the 28th November – 1st December.

What is Lumiere?

Lumiere is a 4-day festival of light – including dozens of beautiful, light-art installations all around the city.
It is completely free and open to everyone.

Lumiere has been held in Durham two times before – in 2009 and in 2011. The last Lumiere saw over 150,000 people come to Durham, and has since had a place in the heart of the North East for bringing joy, beauty, and light to its communities.

Durham Lumiere 2013 runs from the 14th-17th November, and is set to be even more dazzling than ever before.

This year, Lumiere will also be held in Derry-Londonderry as part of the UK City of Culture celebrations, from the 28th November – 1st December.
